Hearing Back

It's about that time of year where we'll be hearing back from colleges. I'm super psyched to announce that I've already been accepted to San Francisco State University and San Jose State University! Looks like the chances of my journey up north are already increasing. I've always dreamed of leaving home to start new adventures, but there are just so many beautiful, unknown things about Santa Barbara that I know I'd hate to abandon. One of them being my family.

I try to make this point very clear to everybody I meet, but family is the number one most important aspect of my life. No matter what it is, family comes first. I have been blessed with the greatest and most supportive family in the whole world; and it's not just immediate—it's my extended family as well. I always knew that no matter what college I choose to go to or what major I decide to major in,

between all of the doubts and hush hush gossip, I would be successful with the pillars of support that my family have provided me with.

The day I found out I was accepted into San Francisco State University was the day that I found out my grandma was officially cancer free: December 20th, 2016. So many feats in one day, how could I forget? The day I found out I was accepted into San Jose State University was the night I was struggling to get through my last chapter of Business Law for the exam the following day: February 14th, 2017. I just feel like the timing has been so right with these acceptances! It's such a huge relief to me that I will be exploring a new territory starting in the fall... SOMEWHERE.

Valentine's Day!

Working hard on making a card!
For many of my fellow single friends, do not fear because February 14th is not a day where we can't celebrate! In the past couple of years, I thought that Valentine's Day doesn't matter much to me—that it was a day solely for couples to exchange chocolates, flowers, and go out to dinner together. But this year was totally different! Maybe I'm going through a crisis because I realize that I'm going to be moving this year and I have to take advantage of and appreciate everything. I think it started with the Ambassadors' Valentine's Day card making event that took place yesterday! My friends, David and Jessica, made the event incredibly fun even though we were expecting a small turnout. However, the turnout was the exact opposite!
Our material scattered across the table.

I brought four packs of scrapbooking paper and 55 rolls of decorative washi tape and we were also provided with scissors, stickers, glitter glue, and chocolates. I made a couple of cards for my friends and some of my friends made me cards. I think because we brought tons of awesome material and the Ambassadors were really welcoming, we were able to attract more people than we thought. At one point, the table became so full that we ended up pulling chairs from all different directions of the library. I felt bad because there were a couple of students who were waiting to make a card, but there wasn't enough space at the table.

In my last post, I discussed being insecure about the way that the advertisement looked, but I'm actually so proud of it. Two students who came to the event said that they saw the posters which oddly made me feel like I had accomplished so much! I think it's amazing how my work reached students I don't even know. With tons of enjoyment and comfort, I was able to meet really lovely and kind-hearted people just in time to get into the spirit of Valentine's Day! So I say this wholeheartedly: Happy Valentine's Day from the bottom of my heart to yours!

Beat the Insecurity!

The end product!
As if I haven't mentioned it enough, I am a student ambassador for SBCC and we're having an event next week for Valentine's Day! In the program, I am a part of the Film and Marketing committee, where I responsible for creating videos, interacting with social media audiences, and getting the word out for our event. This being my second semester in this committee, I thought I would be doing the same thing as the previous semester: writing e-mails and creating Facebook events. Unfortunately, many of last semester's Ambassadors left the program and I become one of the individuals to step up and fill in the job to create posters!

I have a lot of experience with Adobe Photoshop, but only for editing photos... not graphic designing! When it comes to graphic design, I've never really had a knack for it. A lot of my work looks messy, nothing matches... I don't know what I do wrong! Anyway, I had to make an 8.5" x 11 poster first and figure what I wanted to put on it and space everything out. I knew Valentine's Day couldn't go without hearts and flowers so that was the basis of my poster! The hard part was picking the right font, bold or not bold, italicize or not... So much more stressful that I initially thought.
Catch my work on pipeline.sbcc.edu....

After spending about two hours finding images that I would be able to incorporate into my poster, putting all of the elements together and sending the rough drafts out to everybody, I did it! It turned out a lot better than I assumed it would and afterwards, we sent it in to get printed. Later, we decided to make a Pipeline ad (you'll see it on there!!!). Clearly, I'm a pro now so it didn't take long to make. Sent it in... received an e-mail back because there was a typo in "Valentine's" and THEN sent it back. However, got another e-mail back saying that there was and extra s in "Ambassadors"! Super tricky. I can't believe I missed those haha. It was so much fun making the posters and advertisements. I actually do feel like I can do anything now.

Under the Weather

With all of this rain and weather shift, my body has been a little slow on trying to adapt to the change. I've been really under the weather lately! For the past week, I've been dealing with body aches, a sore throat, dizziness, and fatigue... Clearly I can't function like I would normally, but I'm just a girl trying to get through her day, haha. I don't think anyone likes to leave their bed or their room when they're sick, but I just felt like I couldn't miss school and work last week! So I tried to make my days pass by faster and feel a little easier. I want to share a couple of sick student hacks with you:

The result of my "do nothing" phase.
  1. Get LOTS of rest. So cliché to hear this, right? But it's so true. I cannot emphasize this enough! Your body is working major overtime when you're sick so reward yourself with a good 7 to 10 hours of sleep.
  2. Drink a warm, decaffeinated drink to start your morning off. Whether it be warm milk, tea, or even water and some lemon juice, I really recommend a light, warm beverage to make yourself feel a bit better. I'm not absolutely sure if it's a scientifically proven fact that warm drinks do anything beneficial when you're sick, but from my personal experience, I seem to be more bright and refreshed!
  3. Finish all of your tasks (i.e. homework, chores, errands) at least an hour before you plan on going to bed. Your mind will be more relaxed and you'll have a good 30-45 minutes trying to go to bed then you'll be asleep on time!
  4. RELAX. I know I just pushed the "finish your tasks" point, but dedicate one or two hours to doing absolutely nothing. Not only will you appreciate the physical break, but the mental break as well! My favorite things to do are to hop onto Netflix and watch movies, shows, edit photos, crochet, update my planner, and nap.
  5. Last, but not least: don't take more than you can handle. I'm so guilty of not practicing what I preach because I know while I should be resting, taking medicine and recovering, I push myself to go to class or work and just get through my day. Everybody gets sick so just make sure you e-mail your instructor and/or boss if you're going to be missing out on class or your shift.
So after all of this, it's safe to say I'm getting a lot better and I'm feeling way more normal than I have been! It's so weird because I tend to never get sick and when I do, it's such a foreign feeling that I forget the steps on how to care for myself, haha. Stay dry and healthy!
