Grand Adventures

Good evening, friends!

I'm currently in Flagstaff, Arizona and got here around 3PM yesterday afternoon. Guess what was happening on my way here? There was hail and light snow! I experienced my first snowfall last April in Colorado, but it was really wet snow and finally this time, I experienced actual, fluffy snowfall. We're currently staying at the Courtyard Marriott hotel and when we walked into the hotel room, it was really homey and I felt like I was staying at a friend's apartment. I'm rooming with my two younger twin cousins and my 14-year-old cousin, Emily. We're having a blast in the room by ourselves!

Walking along the CO River
Yesterday, we checked out of the Avi hotel and had breakfast in another hotel casino in Laughlin called the Aquarius hotel. It was super clean and we ended up having the breakfast buffet there, but buffets... are not my thing! I get full way too fast and really end up not eating my fill haha. Afterwards, we walked along the Colorado River and took a ton of photos.

Chey & Cousin in the Snow
It was snowing and it was about 28 degrees Fahrenheit out so there happened to be a Big 5 store down the street from the hotel. My parents, my cousin, Trisha, and I drove over and bought some warmer jackets because we definitely weren't prepared for the low temperatures. For me, at least, when I picture Arizona, I think of complete desert, hot and sticky temperatures and lots of people walking around. Aside from the complete desert, it was pretty much the opposite. But, being complete Californians and overreacting at the sight of snow, my mom pulled out her phone and snapped a couple of pictures of me and my cousin in the Big 5 parking lot! That night, we went back to the hotel and enjoyed the comfort of our room. We went out to dinner at a pizza place called Peter Piper Pizza and there was an arcade and that definitely brought the inner child in me out. My cousins, Emily and Trisha, and I spotted a Michaels on our way to the Pizza Parlor and guess what... we ended up going! Every time that we went out, somehow we just ended up throwing snow at each other and got extremely cold. Then, we ended our really long day with a good night's sleep.

Giant Dinosaur Slide at Bedrock City
Today, I woke up at 7:00 AM, took a shower, cleaned up my belongings and we set out for the Grand Canyon. Yes, the Grand Canyon! And that's the whole reason for this trip, everyone! Before hitting the reason behind this road trip, our group stopped at the Bedrock City, best known for the setting in the cartoon, The Flintstones. It was so cute and I absolutely loved it there! There was a giant dinosaur slide, the cartoon animals in statue form and the characters in statue form as well. And last, but not least, there was a goat who was super friendly; however, it was stuck in a small cage and that made me prettttty sad. Not so much of a surprise now, but we took additional pictures there and I actually put the camera on a self-timer for 10 seconds and sprinted in between where our group was taking a picture and where the camera was placed.

Me Risking My Life for a Picture
Finally, we were on our way, driving towards the Grand Canyon National Park! Parking was a bit of a hassle, but when we were out of the car and on the trail, the Grand Canyon itself was completely magnificent. It's one thing seeing its incredibility in pictures, but nothing compares to seeing it in person. The view was breathtaking and you were able to stand as close to the edge as you wanted to, although I would not recommend it. My legs definitely turned into noodles while standing just about a foot away from the edge. The depth of the canyon was insane. We walked to the little museum and stayed at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon for about two hours and then we drove over to the North Rim Lookout Tower. It was basically just a really tall tower where you looked over the Grand Canyon again. But this time, you could spot the Colorado River clearly and I was up super high! There was a really exhausting stair workout to get to the fourth floor, but it was absolutely worth it. I walked back down to the second floor and stayed at the observation deck for a bit. After staying there for another two-ish hours, we headed back to Flagstaff and grabbed dinner at Red Lobster. It was my first time there, too and it was really delicious! Now, it's our last night at the Courtyard Marriott and I'm so bummed because this means that the end of Spring Break is coming soon... Oh well, I'm also excited to head home too, I guess!

See you next post,

Deltopia 2016

Hey everyone! I usually like to stay light-hearted and not focus on serious topics. But I'd like to visit a topic that shouldn't really be seen as a joke. This involves the importance of considering one's health, safety and maintenance of self dignity.

Absurd Advertisement
Most of the time, when people hear about Isla Vista, the first things that come to mind are things like "college students," "drinking," and "partying." Being known as one of the most infamous places for insane street parties, Isla Vista has become the location hosting these parties that have gradually evolved into a horribly unsafe place for a lot of young people to be at.

Out of curiosity, I searched the term "Deltopia 2016" on Facebook and came across this advertisement by a hotel that promoted providing a room for out of towners who are planning on renting out a room for Deltopia which is this weekend, April 2nd. I can't describe how upsetting this is to me. Goleta, a supporting community, has become victim to individuals who don't appreciate the beauty of what the heart of Isla Vista actually is. IV is not just a sub-town of Goleta, but it's a home for students of elementary school, junior high school, high school, working mothers and fathers—families. When these ignorant individuals invade our town, we can't just let it happen. Our home's become torn, there's endless littering and not only are the families affected, but officers and UCSB staff are forced to work throughout the intense hours in which Deltopia takes place in thought of students' safety. New regulations and policies are needlessly being enforced as a result of this event.

Deltopia Riots (2014)
So really, think about it. Is Deltopia really worth it? What about the lives you could be affecting while attending? What about your life? Your health and safety?

If you decide on attending this event, I hope it serves as something beneficial and beneficial as in something purposeful and positively influencing your life. If not, what is the purpose of attending then? If your answer is anything along the lines of, "My friends are going, why can't I?" or "I just want to have the experience," Please, please think long and hard about why you're going and don't give yourself a simple, easy answer like the previous ones.

Deltopia Riots (2014)
The past years have involved countless property damages, the loss of a student's life, riots, fines and many, many more tragedies. With that, I personally have not seen anything positive come out of Deltopia. Sure, temporary self gain might be a factor in which you attend, but again, it's temporary. Excessive alcohol consumption can leave you with a weaker liver and alcohol poisoning. Even if there are a large number of temporary outcomes and there's one permanent outcome, that one permanent outcome will follow you for the rest of your life.

I'm not saying put your glass down and don't ever join your friends in on a party, because everyone deserves a nice get together once in a while, but I'm trying to say that we, as humans, deserve more than what Deltopia has to offer. So this weekend, keep IV safe and keep yourself safe. Do yourself and IV a favor and advertise how much Deltopia hurts our community.

Firsts... Continued

In my last post, I told you all that I'd be letting you know where I would be going for Spring Break.

Last night, I had work from 8:00 AM to 1:10AM and then my family and I ended up leaving my house around 6:30 AM. We made it to my aunt's place in Corona, CA and then left from her home to Laughlin! We made a rest stop and a gas stop along Route 66! I think it was my first time driving along Route 66 haha. There were these weird hilly roads, but we did arrive safely.

On the road to Corona!
Well, the time is finally here and I'm here in Laughlin, Nevada today! We're currently staying at the Avi Casino & Hotel here and I have to admit, for miles upon miles of desert, it's definitely been a pleasure staying here. There's a lot that this hotel has to offer. When we arrived, it was around 3PM and we checked into our hotel rooms. This hotel kind of reminded me of a mall. There was a mini food court which only consisted of Subway, Sbarro, Thrifty and Panda Express. I grabbed lunch/dinner at Sbarro and ordered a classic slice of pepperoni pizza. Afterwards, I bought my cousins and brother and myself some Thrifty Ice Cream and it was delicious! I usually never have dessert, but this was a nice change to enjoy once in a while. Afterwards, we decided to look around the hotel a bit and let me just say, the smell of stale cigarette smoke throughout the casino portion of the hotel was not pleasant at all. But, they did have a movie theater which was super convenient for the kids to hang out at! I went with my cousin, Emily, to see the PG-rated movie, Zootopia—yes, hardcore Spring Break, I know. Disney has been killing it with these animated films that help kids understand that differences are to be accepted by society and that it's okay to be unique. First, it's Frozen, then Inside Out, Big Hero 6 and now Zootopia! Those are only a few of the Disney films that I absolutely fell in love with, haha. But that is an entirely different blog that I could go on about!

Chey & Family
But anyway, while we finished the movie, my brother and my two younger cousins went to the pool and that arcade and kept themselves busy! Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel to a friend if they were visiting Laughlin, haha. I'm sad to be leaving tomorrow, but I'll let you know what I've accomplished by tomorrow night! Hopefully, I'll have a bit of free time to blog and post pictures on the following blog!

Psyched for Spring Break!

Studying Essentials
I know today was the last day for a lot of students before Spring Break, but I still have two more exams to power through on Friday and then I'll be ready to take off on Break! But, as some of you might know, I have a lot of friends who are already on break and they're coming back into town to visit friends and family. I had some pretty awesome adventures and gladly, was able to spend time with everyone without having to insanely worry about finishing homework or studying! I spent the past weekend making sure I finished the majority of my homework, that way I could study and just prep for tests and lectures and then hang out with friends and go to work!

Froyo w/ Maya
This being said... I had the chance to spend time with two of my really great and wonderful friends yesterday and today! Yesterday, I spent time with Maya and we had a really simple hangout that we usually don't ever do. We grabbed some Frozen Yogurt—like every single hangout we've had... it's sort of become our tradition—and then headed out to Michaels Craft Store, but we didn't feel like shopping at all. But, she needed stuff from Staples and we went to check it out and didn't end up buying anything there either haha. After that... we headed over to Ross and looked at some home decor, sniffed some scented candles, sat in the furniture area and chatted about marriage, because that's obviously what every 18-year-old does. Then, we discussed wanting to be able to find a lipstick that we can wear on a night out and a lipstick for everyday light makeup... But that was a botch to because we walked out empty-handed haha. However, the highlight of this hangout was having Maya over and we spontaneously facetimed our friend Kristen, who is now going to school in Vancouver, and now looking back on it, simple is so much better. We all just talked and caught up, but it's never the same with technology! I miss being able to see my friends physically and showing them what's new. But after Spring Break, we'll have Summer Break to look forward to and I'll finally see them in person!

Me in My Natural Habitat
Today, I spent time with my friend David, who's currently going to school in LA and is back home with his family. After my class at 9:30, I went to take my communications practice exam and studied in the Comm Lab for an hour and then went home, took my grandma out and then headed over to David's. We decided on taking a mini trip out to Solvang, which is around 45-50 minutes out from SB. There, we really just acted like tourists. We spent a lot of time is this little toyshop called Solvang Toyland and also had a really tasty lunch at Fresco cafe. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Pesto Sandwich and it was delicious, but I'm always a sucker for pesto... Solvang, although extremely tiny, has so much to offer! We zipped in and out of a lot of shops and discovered this two-story toy shop that also sold so many skeins of yarn... And I kind of fell unconscious haha. It was a dream! We also found out that PCPA will be showing the musical, In The Heights, in the Solvang Theatre around my birthday and we're probably going to go see it haha. We were both in our high school production of In The Heights. We spent about two hours in town, got tired, sat in this little park area for a couple of minutes and then got in the car and drove back home.

It's been so nice seeing these friends and I'm really bummed that they'll be heading out soon, but I know I'll get to see them in a couple of months anyway. I've been so grateful for the turnout of this week and it's definitely been a great lead in for this coming Spring Break. I'm excited to tell you where I'm headed next week! ;)

Behind the Scenes: Blogging

Farren Rd.
It seems like every time I visit my family members, they are always asking me what I am up to at school and at work. I always seem to mention that I blog for SBCC, because obviously it is something that I enjoy doing and it's sort of become a part of who I am as a student at SBCC. Then, I have to follow through with the whole process of just explaining what blogging is, how I do it, how I got involved, and how I know what I'm doing.

After blogging for the past semester and a half, I'd like to say I have a flawed, but functional, process for blogging.

Here are the steps that I try to follow so it makes it easier for me to blog:

  1. First of all... When blogging, you need something to write about, so make sure that you go out and gather experience. Just like any other job, you need experience to help you through the execution of whatever you'll be taking care of. For me, I like to write about my daily encounters and reflect on how it's affected me as an individual.
  2. Jot down your ideas to avoid forgetting the highlights of what you wanted to blog about. I tend to be a slightly forgetful person, so to help me remember what to blog about, I take pictures or just enter a little blurb in my Notes application on my phone.
  3. Now, gather your thoughts. What is it that you want to write about it and why is it important for you to write about it? Although some of what you write may not apply to the majority of your readers, make sure you publish something that will make you happy and satisfied. This is basically your public memory diary!
  4. After gathering your thoughts, get started on writing and don't forget to add the details! A blog post without crucial details are like a BLT sandwich without the BLT... And with that, be sure to take photos to include a little bit of visual aid for your readers to follow and to keep your post interesting to look at.
  5. Finally, hit that publish or post button and let the world read your work!
Example of me asking for a photo of myself... ;)
There is no real purpose behind blogging. The idea of blogging is so various that it's difficult to pinpoint one meaning to it!

I got started with the student blogging team at SBCC by just passing by a booth during New Student Orientation, filling out an application, getting an e-mail and going through an interview process! It was nerve-wracking, but definitely worth it. This is something that has really glued itself onto my college experience and I enjoy writing so much. Truth is, I don't know what I'm doing when I blog. I just do whatever clicks for me and when I think of something that I want to write about, I scribble it down somewhere and take pictures. Trust me, my family members get so annoyed with me asking to get a picture of me doing something or when I pull out my phone or camera to take pictures of whatever's happening. But in the end, it's worth it and there are more memories to look at!

Spring is Here!

Sunday was the first day of Spring and we can definitely feel it in Santa Barbara now. I don't know about you, but I am ready for it to get a little bit warmer. I do have a soft side for the cold, but it's nice to get a little bit of sun once in a while! I actually put on shorts this past week and... boy oh boy... I didn't realize how pale my legs had gotten! Shielding them from the winter sun with my leggings and jeans has become extremely obvious, but hey, I tan easily so it should only take a couple of hours out in the sun to get some color back onto these legs.

Goleta Beach Pier
For some, it's spring break and a lot of my friends are going to be back! Today, was the first day that I would be seeing a friend! My friend who goes to University of Chicago came and I hung out and I had a lot of fun. After my 8AM class, I went home and finished up working on my flash cards for my COMM exam and then he met me over at my house and we headed over to Isla Vista for some yummy Freebirds burritos. I haven't had Freebirds in forever, but needless to say, it was great. Afterwards, we tried to go down to the beach, but the tides were really high... Then, we tried the beach again, but this time, Goleta Beach and it turns out that the sand walls were being worked on! So.. we just walked the pier and then got in the car and drove. Yay for spontaneous decisions, haha. We literally just said left or right and turned and then we ended up at the thrift store at the Magnolia Shopping Center in Goleta. Although... we didn't get anything. So afterwards, since he hasn't had Blenders in a while, we grabbed that and sat down and talked even more. I had work at 2:00 PM, so we headed back home and split!

Finally, I'm home... homework is done and over with and I have time to relax and then I'll hit the hay after posting this blog entry... Good night my friends!

In a Nutshell

Wow have I been busy this past week.

Here it is, Saturday night at 11:41 PM and I am FINALLY able to just sit down and enjoy writing a blog post! I'm currently in Fresno, CA again, visiting my family members and a new addition to the family.

Banner made by yours truly
I'll start out with explaining what happened since last weekend, the 12th of March. My cousin, Chloe, just turned 5-years-old and I helped out with a little bit of party planning. After work on Friday evening, I went home and started baking cookies, five batches to be exact! I didn't get very much sleep and ended up sleeping at 3:00 AM and woke up at 8:00 AM to go to Stow Grove Park to help set up for the party. We had set up so many different things like a flower arch, birthday signs, a little canopy and so, so much more. Throughout the party, we did the usual like sing happy birthday and eat food, but I have two cousins who are both 10-years-old and they are extremely athletic and talented at doing sports.

Me? I am a little less than decent at sports. I wish I could be though! But, at Chloe's birthday celebration, the aunts and older kids got together and we played a very untraditional game of softball and it was honestly the best time I have had in a while. Being able to lay back and just hang out with people you love brings out the best in me.
Tutus for the little girls

The day after, Sunday, I spent the day with my aunt and her kids, the two really athletic twins, and we went to Zodo's with my brother and a couple of other cousins and I hit a jackpot and won a whopping 228 tickets, haha. That day, I found out my new baby cousin, Aiden, just entered the world! Last night, I had the chance to see him for the first time and he is so precious! Everything about him is so perfect and I already love him so much.

Currently, I am just trying to catch up with myself before this next week comes to an end. It seems like I have so much to do in the short time of seven days and I have no idea how I am going to tackle it! I'll keep you all posted!

Being a Grown Up

Did you read the title?

I am so glad that Thursday, March 10th, 2016 is going to be coming to an end! Today has been extremely packed and I couldn't express how happy I am that I finally get to sit down, watch a couple episodes on Netflix and get some rest!

PC: Macy, my sweet bud
Today basically consisted of an exam, an interview, studying and homework. Remember my post about scholarships? Well, following up on the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara, I went in for my interview today at 12 PM and I think it went really well. My interviewer was really kind and it pictured about three individuals there doing and interrogation-style interview. I felt comfortable talking to her about my plans and why I needed the scholarship. The atmosphere was not tense at all.
Pain-makers

Now, I know I'm not alone when I say that I freak out about what is the correct thing to wear to an occasion. I'm a very casual girl! I enjoy being comfortable in a jeans, a t-shirt, or a cotton or linen dress so anything outside of that zone is not really my specialty. I had to put on a chiffon knee-length dress and a short, 3/4 length black cardigan and heels. I had the heels on for nearly 30 minutes, 20 of those sitting down, and my feet were already in pain!

Anyway, I brought a change of clothes because afterwards, I'd be completing some accounting homework with my study buddy from class! But let me just elaborate on my clothing switch a little more. The dress wasn't a tight-fitted dress and my heels were already switched out for some casual sandals, but the feeling of be able to put your hair up, pull on some leggings and pop on a crew neck sweater... Gee, it was definitely a relief after all the had taken place in the last four hours.

I am officially home, doing what I love. Blogging, burning a soy scented candle, crafting and watching Netflix! Truly, truly blessed. Thanks for a busy day, March 10th, but I sure can hold off for a while until another one like this comes along.

**Also! Did you see that we got a new snapchat filter for our school?! ;)

Thought Bubble II

It's Tuesday and here we are with another Thought Bubble blog entry!

Happy belated welcome to the week, everybody. Monday has already passed and I've already taken an exam for my accounting class! Then, this Thursday I have another exam for Business. I am also responsible for putting a presentation together for my communications class and then a research paper for my film studies class that are all due within the next two weeks. So... Super packed schedule.

Lately, I've been frustrated with how I'm managing my time. I don't know exactly what has changed, but all I know is that everything is not flowing as smoothly as it did about two months ago. Last semester seemed to be a breeze and now I'm sort of just getting by. I know this is the overused line of every single college student, but I'm just so tired all the time and I have absolutely no idea why. So, I guess I'm a little concerned about how I'm going to be handling the rest of the semester, but I believe that we have hit our mid-semester mark which makes me SO happy. I know I'll be attending Summer Session I, but at least I'll have a small break. Also, Spring Break is right around the corner and I cannot wait for that either.

This past weekend, I went to Ikea and Target and it was definitely an adventure. I drove my mom and I down to Burbank, CA and we looked around at Ikea, got a couple of items and then made our way home. Originally, we had decided to go to Ventura because I needed to return some lights that I had purchased about three weeks ago. But, I asked my mom if she wanted to come along and she said, "Sure!... Do you want to go to Ikea?" And who could ever say no to that question?

Anyway, I'm picking myself up piece by piece and I'm sure in time I'll get into the swing of things again. We'll see how life starts to treat me in the next couple of weeks!

Too Late?

Pictures that inspire me to do better things!
It's far past January 1st, but I feel like I'm just starting up on my New Year's resolutions. Like I've said in this post, I'm starting up on a list of what I would like to accomplish for this year and I'd like to include you on this personal journey of mine.
  1. Since I've left high school and attended my last singing lesson, I haven't performed anywhere but the SBCC singing competition back in October and the 18 Xeem Hmong New Year in Fresno in December. Being on stage gives me the good kind of chills, but not even being able to experience that really disappoints me. So, although I probably won't have the chance to stand on a stage for a while, I would like to bring more music back in my life. Whether that means practicing or uploading YouTube videos, I really miss my hobby.
  2. I know this is a common one, but being healthy! So many individuals experience the plunging feeling of being self conscious of their physical appearance, but I want this to be more than what's on the outside. I would like to focus on my physical health as well as my mental health. Feeling strong and confident about oneself really boosts your everyday performance and I really think that this would only benefit, not hinder, my future experiences.
  3. I notice that I've started to hesitate significantly when it comes to doing things outside of my comfort zone. Though this might not seem like a really intense problem, I'm losing experiences that I could have with friends or family. If I have even the tiniest sense that I can do whatever it is that I'm invited to be doing, I want to push myself outside of my limit and enjoy new things. In return, my knowledge will broaden and I'll have a couple more stories to tell my future children!
  4. So many of us are intimidated of what the future has in store, but in reality, I think planning helps that intimidation melt away little by little. My goal is to pinpoint which school I want to transfer to, have an idea of where I want to intern, and save a lot of my money to have a little bit of a safety net to land in once I transfer. I'm deathly afraid of what obstacles I'm going to have to overcome, but with a lot of success comes a lot of struggle as well.
  5. I always have room for improvement. I always feel like I'm putting in all the effort I am whenever I'm doing an assignment, studying, or whatever it may be. But am I really? I went to see Professor Chavez today and talked about my in-class assignments. I thought that I had been doing fairly well for the past couple of weeks, but to my surprise, I really had not been doing as well as I thought. It sucks, but it's true. When I do something, anything, I want all of my thoughts to be put across clearly and concisely. I want to impact somebody while they look over my work, whether it be a video or an assignment.
...aaaand that pretty much sums up what I want to do this year. No specifications, really, but just overall, just a list of self-improvement and empowerment goals. I need this to survive and I can't wait to share what's to come!

Oscars After Show

Inside the Dolby Theater
As you all may know, the Oscars took place on Sunday night! I had the amazing chance to go to the Oscars After Show Live Kelly & Michael at the Dolby Theater. My friend's mom won two tickets to attend from KEYT news. We would be going with local news reporters, Kelsey Gerckens and Joey Buttitta.

Where the Oscars Red Carpet was
Around 1:00 AM, I picked up my friend, Sam, and we made our way out to La Cumbre Mall to go board the Santa Barbara Fun Bus. However, there was no one there yet, so we decided to go get some food before so we wouldn't starve on the way there. My brother came with us because I didn't think we could leave my car parked in La Cumbre Mall overnight, but you sure can! Haha, knew about that the following morning. When we boarded the Fun Bus, it was definitely nostalgic. It was basically limo seating in a school bus, but less comfortable seats and not really a smooth ride. We were hitting bumps all throughout the ride to Hollywood Bowl. SO, we were super tired, couldn't get any sleep on the bus and not really feeling well from the food we had before we boarded.

Wristbands!
Then, we arrived in LA at 4:00 AM and it was so chaotic! There were so many cars and other buses ready to take the shuttle from the Hollywood Bowl to the Dolby Theater, where the Oscars were held. I couldn't believe that we were actually there, though. I think it was because I was partially delusional, but after what had seemed like such a long morning, we finally made it. We were given red wristbands so we had some proof of entry to get into the show.

To make it even better, once we got off the shuttle, we had to wait even longer to get into the actual theater. So, it was a bit cold outside and we waited for about 30 minutes and finally got inside. But, once we had gotten into what I think is the lobby of the theater, we had to wait and get into a more chaotic line and didn't actually get seated until around 5:30 or so AM. It was pretty much free seating, but depending on your color wristband, you would be sitting on the floor, second level, third, etc. We got pretty good seats, we were in the aisle on the left side of the room.

Chey & Sam After the After Oscar Show
The show finally started and man, it was definitely hard work being a part of the audience. It's difficult to be cheering, clapping and whoo'ing at 6 in the morning! Kelly and Michael were so SO sweet and the guest stars including Oscar-winning Brie Larson, performers Andy Grammer and Fifth Harmony. It was so surreal to be there, but I really enjoyed the opportunity and would do it again if given the chance. The entire time, I was wondering what it would feel like to just walk on that stage and how much more amazing it would feel to be performing on that stage.

This definitely upped my standards on how I should start my week, but hey, now I just can't stop thinking about it. There's something to work towards, right? ;)

See you next post,

Chey
